Confessions a 20th century ne'er do well: Drinking, fighting, stealing and other things one generally ought not do

It's basically a movie about a little girl who's dog gets killed.

I know there are many clichés about how trippy the Wizard of Oz is. But I watched it recently, and noticed something which is very disturbing.

What is the conflict that sends Dorothy off on her adventure?
The old woman wants to take Toto away. And presumably, since she’s handing him into the authorities, the pup will be put to sleep.
She makes her case to Auntie Em and Uncle Henry: This dog bit me. It is illegal for you to keep a dangerous animal.
Antie Em and Henry are pretty clear. While they think the woman is mean, they unambiguously agree to turn the dog in.
So, since they have agreed, the fact that the dog escapes is irrelevant. In fact, this is why Dorothy runs away in the first place.

The whole idea of “there is no place like home” is actually resolved about 5 minutes after she runs away – the carnival guy convinces her immediately that this is a bad idea.

So, even though Glenda says “All you had to do was realize that there is no place like home, and you’ll return there” the fact is not really the conflict. She already decided, even before coming to Oz, that she wants to go home. Even when she ran away, she wasn’t really upset with home per se. She ran away for one reason alone.

That reason was because Auntie Em and Uncle Henry had agreed to turn the dog over to the authorities. The dog was not safe there.

BUT THAT ISSUE IS NEVER RESOLVED!!!!!

The movie ends up with her cuddling up with Toto and saying something to the effect of “Yay Toto, we’re home.”

But presumably, the old lady is simply going to show up in a day or too, or the sheriff himself to take the dog away to the pound!!!!! The stepparents haven't changed their minds!!

The movie ends without the main issue being resolved. It is the plot point that drives the movie from act one to act two. The reason she bumps her head in the first place is a result of her attempt to save her dog! This is not a minor inconsistency – it is instrumental to the plot of the movie, and is a MAIN CONFLICT OF THE MOVIE!!! It’s blatant!!!

THE UNSAID TRUTH OF THE WIZARD OF OZ IS THAT TOTO GETS KILLED SOON AFTER THE CAMERAS ARE TURNED OFF!!!!!!!!!

True, it looks like the poor little dog did not have a chance, but Margaret Hamilton, was one hell of a witch.

Watch it with Pink Floyd in the background. It helps.

Oz, and some lysergic acid, would be interesting. But as far as bad trips go, someone has already beat me to it; with a bad penis Sean Connery, rampaging around nearly buck naked, having sex, and shooting lots of bullets, and seeds.
Zardoz is a very strange movie for someone as good as Connery to be in.

I love Zardoz -- it might be my favorite Connery film. As far as The Wizard of Oz goes, I'd never thought about it like that, but I'd wager that since Toto appears in the sequel the issue was somehow resolved.

A possible point of resolution is noted in the Wikipedia article for The Wizard of Oz:

It should be noted however, that the film ends with Dorothy and Toto's problem with Miss Gulch unresolved. Many suggest that Gulch was killed in the cyclone, as she was seen flying through the air as Dorothy traveled to Oz.

Makes sense to me!

As far as the comment from Anonymous goes, Dave, welcome to my world! Folks often write stuff like that after reading Scary-Crayon articles. :(

I am happy as a clam, not only will I have more fabulous adventures of Bananaman to look foreword to; I have also found a new friend, Miss Cellania. Who is also really into bananas, and she keeps some cool blogs too. And the best of all! She is in KENTUCKY! Yes, this poor obstinate Hillbilly, is not alone anymore! Wes, I liked Zardoz, but it could have been better. It was made on a tight budget, and they had little money to work with. They were very lucky to get Sean Connery, and I doubt he would ever do it again. as for The Wizard of Oz. Maybe something did happen to Miss Gulch. I don't remember how the story ended in the book. I will have to look it up, and revisit my childhood.

Dave, I suppose we spoiled the happy ending for a lot of neurotic folks, who depend on having all serious issues resolved by the end of the movie.

O tay Dave, I will do more plagi ...err... paraphrasing. Links are convient, but when it comes to written text; it is not a very professional way to make a point. As another good friend of ours reminds me from time to time. The Sun does not rotate around the keeper.
